Where will you go today?

First Christian Church

In the Belly of a Whale

To date I’ve had at least 5 invitations to go on a missions trip, either with my church, or from family members and friends. Today I’m batting 0 for 5.

Have I been prayerful about the opportunities that have presented themselves…”Yes”. Have I been obedient…”No”. My home church goes on what I would deem “entry level” missions trips each year to South America. I’ve been invited to Croatia, and Macedonia each of the last two years. This fall I was invited to Israel…turned that down too. Are you seeing a theme here? No my name is not Jonah, although don’t be surprised to see me checking out the inners of a big fish in the near future.

How Generous Are We?

A while back, I guess its been close to 12 years ago when I was at Wheaton College I read Ron Sider’s Book  “Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger”. Well, let’s be honest…I read some of it. Happily, I didn’t sell it back to the book store for pizza money but kept it all these years. I started reading it again a last week. What an awesome book that speaks to God’s call to generosity.

Living in the suburbs just outside of Chicago, materialism and excess runs rampant. It’s easy to become so focused on the immediate environment around us, that we completely overlook God’s call to help those in need not just in our community but in the world around us.

“The United States is one of the richest nations in the world…but the US Government ranks dead last among major western donors of foreign aid. The US gives just 0.14 of GNP in foreign aid. The United Kingdom ranks only slightly higher-seventh from the bottom.” – Source: Organization for Co-operation and Development. http://www.oecd.org/home/
